Artificial Grass 101

Artificial grass has come a long way since it was first introduced in the 1960’s. AstroTurf, the surface used for the playing field inside the Houston Astrodome, did not resemble real grass at all. The artificial turf was not aesthetically pleasing to many fans and the athletes complained about the friction created upon impact. Questions about the safety and advantages of artificial turf for sports fields arose throughout the 1980’s and into the 1990’s.

Since that time, the use of synthetic grass has increased in popularity. This is not only because it more closely resembles natural grass in appearance, but it is also superior in texture and performance. In fact, many people find it difficult to visually tell the difference between an artificial lawn and a natural lawn.

Artificial grass also has advantages that aren’t purely aesthetic. Due to its superior drainage properties, it can be safer because it isn’t as slippery as natural grass when wet. Plus, you have the added advantage of a play surface that is both child-friendly and pet-friendly that won’t lead to mud being tracked through your home!

Artificial Grass is Eco-Friendly

Artificial grass is the perfect choice for Eco-friendly landscaping because it’s practically maintenance-free, which saves you a lot of time and money. Faux grass doesn’t fade or brown like natural grass. It isn’t susceptible to drought or disease and has a very long lifespan. In addition to the aesthetic benefits, you will not experience long-term maintenance because water isn’t needed to keep your lawn perfectly green year-round- even through the hottest and driest summer months.

Artificial grass has many benefits from environmental sustainability to enhanced health and safety qualities. Unlike live grass, it is inhospitable to mold and other allergens. People who are environmentally conscious can get a lush, green lawn without the added costs of maintaining natural grass. There is no need to worry about using gas, oil, fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides that can be harmful to the environment.

Artificial turf is great for shaded areas, hillsides, and around swimming pools where it can be difficult for natural grass to grow. Think about your lawn, do it have an area where grass won’t grow because of shade or poor drainage? If your lawn has a problem area, or two, or three…then artificial turf could be the answer for you!

How Artificial Grass is Made

Have you ever wondered how artificial grass is produced?

Artificial turf is made out of the same familiar materials that are used to make other durable products such as carpeting, water pipes, plastic bottles, and toys. These materials are ideal because they have properties that make them resistant to bacteria, mold, and germs, they hold up well against the elements, and don’t wear down with constant use. Strong adhesives are used to hold the faux grass together and won’t break down from heavy use or weather conditions. These adhesives are non-threatening to people, pets, and the environment.

There are different components that make up your artificial grass. The three main components – the blades, the backing, and the infill – make up your turf.

Blades are made from several different materials, depending on the specific needs of your installation. Nylon is the most expensive artificial grass material, but is also the most durable, with the stiffest blades. It holds up particularly well under heavy foot traffic and in high temperature environments. When combined with other blade materials, it makes the perfect surface for sports fields, lawns, putting greens, and any number of other applications.

Other common blade materials include polypropylene and polyethylene – or a combination of the two. Regardless of the material, blades come in a variety of shapes (“S-Shape”, “W-Shape”, “Diamond”, “V-Shape”, and more), hues, lengths, and thicknesses to suit the individual needs and desired look for any customer.

The blades are attached to a mesh backing which is the foundation for your artificial grass. Typically, the backing is made from a blend of polypropylene and polyethylene. The backing is integral to the durability of your faux grass, as well as its superior drainage qualities.

The infill, or the base, adds supports and aids with efficient drainage. Acting much like the soil under natural grass, it also provides shock absorption and a more cushioned feel. Infill is commonly made from tiny pellets of recycled tire rubber or natural sand. Depending on the type of artificial turf being used the types of infill can be used individually or in combination with one another in order to maximize the look, feel, and life span of your artificial grass.

While this only scratches the surface of what there is to know about artificial grass, it shouldn’t be turf to see how artificial turf could be the perfect option for your lawn.
